From One Boat to a Movement: How I Started a Women’s Sailing School from Scratch

Almost two years ago, I had a moment of quiet clarity. I was tired of being one of the only women on the race course.
It wasn’t anger or frustration—it was a deep sense that something needed to change. “There has to be a better way,” I thought. A way to welcome more women into sailing. A way to create a space where we could learn, grow, and compete—without needing to prove ourselves every step of the way.
That moment sparked something far greater than I could have imagined.

Learning as I Went
Starting a sailing school was a leap of faith. I didn’t have a blueprint, a big budget, or a team. Just a boat, a mission, and a lot of late nights figuring things out—registering the business, writing lesson plans, building a website, securing insurance, and promoting classes.
There were plenty of mistakes, but every challenge taught me something. Slowly, piece by piece, things began to come together.
🌟 From First Students to a Thriving Community

The early classes were small—sometimes just one or two women. But those sessions were powerful. Each sailor brought her own story, her own reasons for showing up, and her own quiet courage.
Together, we learned, laughed, and built confidence. As the sails filled, so did a sense of connection. We weren’t just learning to sail—we were building a community.
Creating Space Where Women Belong
I didn’t want to just teach sailing. I wanted to create a space where women felt safe, supported, and seen. A place where questions were welcome, gear didn’t matter, and encouragement was the norm.
And today, that space is thriving. Our classes are full. Women who once doubted themselves are confidently trimming sails, racing, and mentoring others. We've built something bigger than ourselves.
🌍 Growing Beyond Our Roots
What began as a women-focused sailing school has grown into something more. We now welcome everyone—all genders, all backgrounds, and all experience levels. We’re proud to be a US Sailing Accredited School, offering certifications and structured learning for both beginners and those looking to advance.
We’re not just teaching people to sail—we’re changing who gets to be on the water.
Introducing Sail Her Dreams: Where STEM Meets Sailing
Out of this journey, I also founded Sail Her Dreams, a nonprofit created to inspire girls in two underrepresented fields: STEM and sailing.
This summer, seven amazing women mentors—developers, engineers, scientists, and ocean advocates—will join us to speak with our students, share their journeys, and inspire the next generation to take the helm both on and off the water.
We’re connecting wind power with brain power—and we’re just getting started.
🏗️ A Home at Montrose Harbor

The latest adventure? I just secured the lease on a once-abandoned building at Montrose Harbor. This future home will become our sailing education center—a place for learning, mentoring, community events, and belonging.
We’re transforming a forgotten space into a vibrant hub for change. It’s where our mission will take permanent root.
Looking Ahead
Starting this school from scratch has been one of the hardest—and most rewarding—things I’ve ever done. I’ve grown alongside our students and found lifelong connections with instructors, partners, and mentors.
If you’re dreaming of starting something new—do it. Begin where you are. Ask questions. Find your crew.
And if you’re looking for a place to sail, to learn, and to be part of something bigger—we’re saving you a spot at the dock.
